In a small saucepan,
simmer the raisins and the water over low heat, until the raisins
are plump.
While the rasins
are simmering:
In a mixing
bowl, cream together the shortening, sugar, eggs, and vanilla.
Add the flour,
baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, cloves, oats and nuts,
and mix thoroughly.
Drain the raisins,
reserving the liquid. Add the raisins and 1/2 cup of the water to
the mixing bowl, and mix thoroughly.
Preheat your
oven to 400 degrees F.
Take two spoons,
and drop the dough by rounded spoonfuls onto an ungreased cookie
sheet, two inches apart.
Bake the cookies
for 10-12 minutes, until the edges are golden brown.
Transfer the
cookies from the pan to a cooling rack, and let cool before transferring
the cookies to cookie jar.
Makes about
2-3 dozen cookies.
